The Winners of eVolo’s Skyscraper Competition
By Lucas on Mar 13, 2013
The eVolo Skyscraper competition may be young, but it has attracted an international audience. This year, eVolo received 625 entries from 83 different countries. The eVolo Skyscraper competition isn’t necessarily to come up with the most realistic design, but to present ones that “challenge the way we understand vertical architecture and its relationship with the natural and built environments.”
The top three winners have been announced!
Coming in at third place is “Light Park” by Ting Xu and Yiming Chen from China. Their design is of a floating tower that would be comprised of housing, commercial, and recreational space. Obviously, this skyscraper is an example of what we’ll have to move towards when we’ve completely run out of land!
Second place is held by “Phobia Skyscraper” by Darius Maikoff and Elodie Godo from France - and it’s our favourite of the top three. This design is planned for an industrial area of France, and is completely comprised of prefabricated housing. The reason that it’s our favourite is because we’ve never seen a building shape like that before, and it seems like the most feasible design out of the three.
And, taking first place is “Polar Umbrella” by Derek Pirozzi from the USA. This skyscraper would float with the melting ice caps, reducing heat gain and freezing the ocean water. The tower would serve as a tourist attraction, as well as a research facility.
What do you think of the designs? Do you think any of these types of skyscrapers are possible in our near future?
