Why you need extra storage during the winter

Have you been putting off packing all your summer clothes into storage? Face it – the temperature has already dropped below zero and there’s a bunch of stuff you don’t need quick access to anymore, plus there’s a lot more winter stuff you need to use on a daily basis. So, it’s time to start thinking about extra storage around your home.
1) Pack away the clothes
You likely don’t need a summer dress during the winter (unless you’re one of the lucky ones going away for the holidays). If you lack the closet space, under-bed storage is a simple solution. You can get long tupperware containers designed for being under beds. Folding tip – you can fit more clothing in a container if you roll it up as opposed to folding.
2) Mudroom organization
While you’re packing away the summer clothes, you’re probably dragging out the winter gear. With the cold comes many more accessories like scarves, toques, gloves, extra thick socks, etc.
It’s important to keep your entryway organized, so you may consider installing some extra storage in the mudroom. Here are a few tips from interior designer, Jo-Ann Capelaci.
3) Make room for firewood
Yes, you may use your fireplace through the other seasons, but you’ll definitely use it more during the winter! Before you start chopping and stocking up on firewood, make sure you’ve checked your fireplace for safety issues.
If you plan on storing a lot of firewood, you’ll likely keep it outdoors. Eieihome.com recommends keeping your wood pile about 30 meters from your home. Find out why! They also suggest not keeping your firewood in your home.
The best thing to do is to keep your firewood covered, keep it off the ground, and make it easily accessible!
4) Organize your garage
To avoid scraping and brushing off your car every morning before work, you should keep it in your garage. As a storage area, it’s easy for garages to be in disarray, but with a little bit of effort, you can have room for your car, bikes, and golf clubs.
If you’re feeling really ambitious, you can build a loft to store boxes and other easily carriable items. Ceiling hooks are great for bikes so you free up floor space, and if you’re feeling stylish, there are a few beautiful ways of mounting your bike.
5) Brave the basement
Some people have finished basements, some don’t. If it’s unfinished, then we’re guessing it’s messier than your neighbours basement with the pool table and media room.
Either way, basements are ideal storage areas, but you need to make sure it’s neat and tidy. You can accomplish this by designating a certain area for storage and then doing your best to organize your items within that space.
It’s also crucial that your basement is properly maintained. If your pipes freeze in the winter and burst, a flood could destroy all of your possessions.
To enjoy a comfortable and cozy winter, we recommend you take a few of these items into consideration! If you’re buying a new home, keep these things in mind for when you move in.
