Weekends at the St. Lawrence Market in Toronto

By Lucas on Jul 21, 2014

When it comes to weekends in the summer, it’s difficult to argue that there’s a better place to be than St. Lawrence Market in Toronto. There are two reasons why you need to visit the St.Lawrence Market this weekend: The Saturday farmers’ market and the Sunday antique market.

The farmers’ market has been operating since 1803, but back then it was located in Toronto’s City Hall. Today, the market operates in two buildings, one on the southwest side of Jarvis and Front, and the other on the north side. The south market is open during the week (except Monday), but the big market day is Saturday. On Saturdays, the north market features local produce, meats, and dairy products. The variety, quality, and atmosphere is what placed the St. Lawrence farmers’ market at the top of National Geographic’s list of Top 10 food markets in the world! If you’re planning to go this Saturday, brace yourself for a huge crowd!

On Sundays, the neighbourhood is a little more quiet and the north market features a wide variety of antique vendors. From vintage watches and dusty records to antique furniture and ceramic knick-knacks, the St. Lawrence antique market is essentially a giant treasure chest. You never know what you’re going to find!

It’s amazing that Toronto’s largest antique market and the world’s top farmers’ market are located at the same location every weekend! Also, the area recently got even better with the redevelopment of Market Street. A new row of amazing restaurants opened along the strip, so you can make a whole afternoon out of your trip to the St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood!

Living in the St. Lawrence area

As you can imagine, St. Lawrence is a highly desirable neighbourhood. You would expect a lot of condos to be built in the area, but the City has done a really good job at controlling the streetscape and preserving the “old town” atmosphere.

The Berczy by Concert at the corner of Front and Church was completed recently. Its boutique style and use of brick on the lower floors complements the area nicely. Just north of The Berczy, Freed Developments’ Sixty Colborne Condos is in the preconstruction phase.

88 Scott, another Concert condo, recently started construction at the corner of Scott and Wellington, and Cityzen’s L Tower and Backstage are underway at Scott and The Esplanade. The L Tower has topped off and is looking amazing on Toronto’s skyline, and Backstage is now a few floors above grade. Even AXIOM Condos at Adelaide East and Ontario by Greenpark and Fieldgate is only a 10 minute walk away.

So, if you want to live an elevator ride away from the St. Lawrence Market, you may want to look into these new condos!
