Walkability: Downtown Oakville - 90
By Lucas on Aug 13, 2013
So far in Walkability Month, we’ve visited King West, a booming neighbourhood full of new condos, and The Junction Triangle, an up-and-coming neighbourhood with a number of condos in the preconstruction phase. This week, we figured we would change things up a bit and explore Downtown Oakville.
Downtown Oakville on WalkScore.com
Like any other neighbourhood, the boundaries of Downtown Oakville are debatable. For the purpose of our feature, Downtown Oakville is anywhere along or near Lakeshore Road East, between Trafalgar and Navy.
If you type in “downtown Oakville” on WalkScore.com, the neighbourhood only has a score of 68, but that’s because the website considers Speers and Queen Mary Drive downtown Oakville, which we know isn’t the case.
Anyone who lives in Oakville knows that downtown is around Lakeshore Road East between our set boundaries. WalkScore.com gives this area a 90, ranking it as a “Walker’s Paradise,” meaning your daily errands do not require a car.
The amenities of Downtown Oakville
The Town of Oakville was established in the early 1800s, and its history has been well preserved. If you venture south of Lakeshore Road, you will find that many of the first homes ever built in the area are still standing, many with their first residents noted, such as the home of George King Chisholm, the first mayor of Oakville.
Along Lakeshore Road East, there are many restaurants, cafes, bakeries, grocery stores, and independent shops. The selection of amenities caters to people of all ages, and The Oakville Club offers a variety of sporting activities, such as tennis and boating.
In addition to the wide spectrum of great neighbourhood amenities, Downtown Oakville also offers a beautiful waterfront on Lake Ontario. There are many parks along the waterfront and a trail traverses the water’s edge. On any sunny day, families head down to the lake to enjoy the weather and the cool wind off the waves. Not many walkable neighbourhoods can offer a view like this.
