The VIP Launch of 2221 Yonge

Earlier this week, our friends at Tower Hill Development Corporation invited their closest friends and family out to the VIP launch of their newest Toronto project, 2221 Yonge. Russell Masters, Sandi Pei, and others were all on hand to show off their latest addition to the Toronto skyline.

“On behalf of my brother Randy and myself, I’d like to welcome you all to the grand opening of our sales office here at 2221 Yonge. As most of you know, Tower Hill is a third-generation family-run business, started by our grandfather. Grandpa was a leading developer within the City of Toronto in his day. He had a particular affinity for building unique buildings, focusing on the architecture and the structure. Following that lead, we have taken those ideals to the next level with 2221 Yonge,” said Russell Masters, the Vice-President at Tower Hill.

Masters introduced us to the tower’s design, which was headed up by world famous architect Sandi Pei of Pei Partnership Architects. Pei is responsible for a multitude of award-winning projects in both North America and Asia.

“Our only instruction for Sandi was to build whatever he wanted, but to ensure that it didn’t look like every other building in Toronto. We don’t want a glass box of a tower that looks like an office building. You can see, they have done an incredible job. It’s a very unique building,” Masters said.

Pei was on hand to celebrate the event, and echoed Masters comments regarding the design and scope of the building.

“This is a project that we started about a year ago. Some of the important features have included the effort to ensure that we avoided what we have recently seen in Toronto with regards to glass box buildings, specifically those without much character. We wanted to look to another type of design, one that is fresh, but one that is also linked to the past of Toronto,” he said.

2221 Yonge is described as a “modernist sculpture,” which will be rising near the corner of Yonge and Eglinton. The neighbourhood features easily accessible transit, a great mix of shopping and dining options, as well as many green outdoor spaces. We weren’t surprised to find the VIP launch of 2221 Yonge fully packed.
