The top spring home improvement ideas for 2016

It might sound ridiculous given the current weather, but spring is here. If your home looks like it could do with a bit of spring cleaning and more than a bit of home improvement, then you’re in luck. We’ve compiled a list of some of this year’s hottest home design and décor trends to help you get your home ready for warmer weather.

Turn your home into a jungle

This particular trend is not for the faint of heart. A jungle themed room (at Modernize we love this look in patios, conservatories, or even living rooms if you’re feeling particularly brave) should be filled with clashing colours, intriguing patterns, and mixed materials.

Henry Holland, an interior designer who is launching his own collection at Habitat, says that this theme is hot for spring 2016. If you want to take the tropical theme to the next level, bring in a few pieces of rattan furniture, which is set to make a big comeback this year as well.

Spice up your living space with a global makeover

Philippa Prinsloo at John Lewis Home reckons Brazilian patterns and styles will be big this spring. Bright coloured upholstery, throws, and cushions in purple, orange, and green will evoke a South American vibe in your living room, bedroom, or even on your front porch or entryway.

Transform your bathroom with a statement mirror

While large bathroom renovations can be costly, there are more than a few ways to give this space a fresh look without breaking the bank. A large, unique statement mirror will do just that (while staying perfectly on trend for 2016). Simply hang your mirror over the sink and watch your bathroom be transformed. This works just as well in just about any room throughout the house: our mantra is, the more mirrors, the better.

Make your own upcycled furniture

Shabby chic furniture and other recycled home décor has risen in popularity over the past few years, but we think that upcycled furniture is expected to take a sophisticated turn this year.

Take your own well-loved furniture and add a few rich fabrics and deluxe fittings, or start with higher end pieces and restore them to their original glory. While this particular kind of home improvement project can be time-consuming, it saves money and puts a personal stamp on your home in a way that store-bought furniture just can’t.

Add a coat of paint

Even the least DIY savvy homeowner can manage to paint a room, so if you’re stuck for home improvement projects but still feel like yours needs sprucing up, then this kind of job should be right up your alley.

Stay on trend this spring with the Pantone Color of the Year for 2016, which is actually two colours incorporated in one space. Rose Quartz and Serenity, or pink and blue to most of us, is a surprisingly pleasant, if political, combination that would work perfectly in a nursery, living room, or even home office.
