The View From Here

One of the many considerations to address when you are shopping for a condominium suite is what kind of views you will have. Certainly, with most of today’s beautiful open-concept suites featuring massive windows, views become an important part of your everyday life, and in fact, your décor. It’s like having ever-changing wallpaper that reflects the seasons. And often, as you go up in floors in a condominium, there are premiums for the views, which is understandable.

An obvious example is a Toronto condominium situated within proximity to Lake Ontario. Of course, lake views will be in demand, and the higher, the better. There is something wonderful about gazing out on a large expanse of water when it is glassy calm or when the waves are gently lapping onto the shore. And frankly, it is fascinating to look out over the water during a storm. Even in the middle of winter, it is a treat to see winter birds dance on the surface of the water and ice. And views keep condo owners grounded in nature in other ways, too, especially since the City of Toronto has so many parks and green areas. Just drive along any of our major highways, and take a good look. It is astounding how many treed areas punctuate the cityscape.

As tempting as all of this is, there are many condominium purchasers who thrive on exciting city views – especially at night. The panorama of sparkling lights across the city under the umbrella of a start-studded sky is positively breathtaking. And speaking of time of the day, are you a morning person? Will you consider your day off to a great start if you have your coffee on the balcony and watch the sunrise? If so, you will want an eastern view. Or would you rather face west and wrap up your workday by coming home to a tall, cool drink as you watch the sun set?

Keep in mind, too, whether you intend to use your balcony or terrace for gardening. For many people, keeping their green thumbs busy is critical to their lifestyle. Outdoor living spaces are just that – extensions of your suite that can add greatly to your lifestyle.

I have seen some gorgeous container gardens on balconies with everything from ornamental grasses to small trees, exotic flowers, wonderful fresh herbs, and even tomatoes. If you are an avid gardener with specific ideas on the gardens you wish to achieve, speak with your local garden centre and ask an expert which direction would be optimum for your balcony to face. Ask, too, about hearty plant varieties that can withstand wind and sun. There are some plants that do well with morning sun, others that thrive on afternoon rays. And speaking of sun, depending on the direction your suite faces, choose window treatments/blinds that will protect your flooring and furnishings from direct rays during the critical times of the day.

So far, I have discussed views and outdoor spaces on the higher floors – but perhaps you prefer a suite on a lower level so that you feel more a part of the activity on the street. For many, this vibrancy is both reassuring and fun. People-watchers enjoy sitting on their balconies, taking in the hustle and bustle of the population passing by.

Whatever the time of year, whether it’s looking at water views or the city, the vistas from your condominium windows can help you relax and unwind at the end of a stressful day. Views are so important in the condominium purchasing process, that most builders take “view shots” from the various floors and include them in brochures and on websites. Take a look before you select your suite and floor, and choose the views that will make you feel at home in your new home!
