Last week at the 2016 Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) Celebration of Excellence Awards and Dinner at the Allstream Centre in Toronto, three additional awards were presented in addition to the Design Excellence winners.
Comedian and host of Food Network Canada’s show Eat St., James Cunningham, was the MC for the evening, and the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario was in attendance to present the Lieutenant Governor’s Award. Top architects, industry guests, clients of the winning projects, and other architecture enthusiasts were all present for the annual event.

The Lieutenant Governor’s Award was awarded to the Richard Ivey Building, Richard Ivey School of Business, Western University, a building designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects.
Prince Arthur’s Landing
The second award of the evening was the Michael V. and Wanda Plachta Award, which honours architectural excellence for projects in Ontario that cost less than $8 million. This award was presented to Brook McIlroy Inc., for Prince Arthur’s Landing, Thunder Bay Waterfront.

The third award, People’s Choice (based on public vote) was presented to the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, a project by Moriyama & Teshima Architects in association with Maki and Associate.
“This year’s Design Excellence Award honourees stand not only as beautiful buildings, but also as examples of architecture’s ability to creatively problem solve,” says OAA President, Toon Dreessen. “From multi-generational housing to adaptive reuse of underutilized sites to flexible spaces that can be reconfigured to users’ needs, Ontario’s architects are once again showing their ability to respond to the changing needs of our communities and our society.”
