TARION: Radon and Your New Home Warranty
By Lucas on Jul 30, 2014
Radon is a tasteless, odourless, invisible, radioactive gas that is completely natural and some is present in almost every home. Radon can enter your home through gaps between your house and the soil, and is typically more concentrated in basements.
Sounds kind of scary doesn’t it? Keep in mind, it is very rare for radon levels to exceed Health Canada’s guidelines, but prolonged exposure to an excessive amount can lead to health problems as serious as lung cancer.
That’s why it is very important for you to test the radon level in your home. You can purchase a short term and long term test to measure the amount of radon or hire a professional
Radon is measured in a unit called becquerels, and Health Canada recommends that you take action to reduce the amount of radon in your home if levels reach above 200 becquerels/m3.
Tarion covers excessive levels of radon for the full seven year warranty. If you hire a professional or conduct a long term test and provide results to Tarion and the builder during your warranty time, you can be covered for up to $15,000.
