Singapore’s Tallest Tower Revealed!
By Lucas on May 16, 2013
Earlier this month, Singapore-based developer GuocoLand revealed their plans for their latest project, the Tanjong Pagar Centre. What’s so special about this tower? Upon completion (scheduled for 2016), it will be the tallest tower in Singapore.
The design of Tanjong Pagar Centre
What architecture firm is known for designing some of the tallest towers in the world? You got it – Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM). SOM is the firm responsible for One World Trade Center, a little tower called Burj Khalifa, and a number of other high-rises around the globe.
While Tanjong Pagar Centre will be Singapore’s tallest, it doesn’t exactly match the height of say, something like Burj Khalifa (2,716 feet). Tanjong Pagar Centre will stand 951 feet, just over a third of the height of the world’s tallest.
For a SOM design, Tanjong Pagar Centre is pretty tame. If you ever have the chance to glance at SOM’s portfolio of work, you will probably discover that some of your favourite buildings are designed by them. Tanjong Pagar Centre seems very safe – especially considering it’s going to be located in Singapore, where we find some of the world’s most beautiful architecture.
The purpose of Tanjong Pagar Centre
Perhaps the reason that the design of Tanjong Pagar Centre is so safe is because of the high number of other interesting towers in the area. Tanjong Pagar Centre will serve as the heart of the Tanjong Pagar business district, and its tall, block-like presence will stand out, and potentially symbolize solidity and strength in Singapore’s business realm.
Tanjong Pagar Centre will feature 1.7 million square feet of space, and be comprised of office, retail, hotel, and of course, residential components. The tower will rise from a six-storey podium, which will feature parking spots, restaurants, and many other amenity spaces.
Another major part of the Tanjong Pagar Centre project is the redevelopment of the City Park. Like any business district, public space is very important, and the goal is to create a more vibrant, active, and sustainable urban environment for residents and people who work in the area.
What do you think of the design?
