Four Seasons: Public Art at Emerald City in North York

By Lucas on Jan 27, 2014

We recently braved the cold to grab a few photos of the new public art at ELAD CANADA’s Emerald City development in North York.

Four Seasons at Emerald City

Designed by Douglas Coupland, the public art is called Four Seasons because each cone is inspired by Canada’s unique cycle of seasons. One of them is mostly white, which is clearly inspired by winter, one that we felt especially connected to on that frigid day.

“I created the Four Seasons works to generate a new and singular landscape for Emerald City. The works are meant to convey both optimism and a sense of joy in being outside in the physical Canadian world,” Coupland explains. “The colours come from those used in boxes of Laurentien pencil crayons. Most Canadians younger than 60 will remember getting a new box of Laurentiens every September. These pencil crayons and their brilliant colours are as friendly and reassuring to most Canadians as the smell of Play Doh or the sound of Lego rattling in a box.”

The main piece of the public art is the four cones rising 40 to 60 feet in the courtyard between Emerald City 1 and 2, but three other smaller cylinders have been installed on the street side of Emerald City 1.
