Kids Culinary Community has broken ground on a new Earth-to-Table garden where children and their mentors will have the opportunity to plant, grow and harvest their own vegetables with the help of volunteers.

The goal of this project is to give participants an understanding of where food comes from and the important role that farmers play in our lives. The participants will reap the rewards of this understanding by actively participating in the growth cycle of food, and then preparing healthy meals with the food they harvest.

The Director and Founder of Kids Culinary Community is well-known Oakville Chef and Restaurateur Julia Hanna, the driving force behind Ristorante Julia and Ritorno. Kids Culinary Community is a not-for-profit initiative dedicated to educating children about healthy eating through hands-on experiences.

The organization’s founding partner is Longo's. Rosehaven Homes and Starlane Homes, who together have donated the land for the garden are proud sponsors and supporters of the initiative.

"This initiative began when I was speaking with Rosanne Longo, when we decided we needed to educate our children about healthy eating choices," says Hanna. "We want our children to be happy and healthy, and this all starts with food."

Kids Culinary Community Attendees at the ground breaking included Halton's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Bob Nosal, Regional Chair Gary Carr, Lou Bada of Starlane Homes, Rosanne and Anthony Longo, Silvio Guglietti of Rosehaven Homes, Ward 5 Councillors Marc Grant and Jeff Knoll, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and Silvano Tardella of Nak Designs.

"I believe that what we have started here will be a role model for other municipalities," says Hanna. "We have great support here within the community."

Construction will begin soon, led by Leon Denbok of Denbok Landscaping, who is donating his time and expertise. Children enrolled in the program will plant and tend to the garden throughout the summer, with the help of volunteers.

The community garden will be located within the new Woodland Trails neighbourhood, at Neyagawa Blvd. and Dundas St. in Oakville, Ontario.
