New renderings for 592 Sherbourne St.

One condominium proposal that we have kept a keen eye on throughout this year is Cityzen's 592 Sherbourne St. project, the site of the Clarion Hotel.
Cityzen is looking to build a monumental, 52-storey condominium tower at the corner of Sherbourne and Selby, with a real focus on colour and design. As part of the plan, they are also hoping to restore the Gooderham Mansion, which will act as an entrance to the condominium tower.
Recently, Sam Crignano of Cityzen Developments spelled out his vision for the project, and explained how Cityzen is approaching the development of the site via the Cityzen blog.
"What people first notice when they see the Sherbourne & Selby rendering is probably the colour. In fact the colour is still up in the air. The architect still needs to finalize the cladding material and the ultimate colour. He felt strongly about distinguishing this building from the ones around it. The cladding material will be different from what you typically find, which is glass, metal or concrete precast. The material itself will be unique, as well as the colour.”
“This project is not about blending in. We're always in pursuit of design excellence and I think we started something when we announced the design competition for Absolute. Since then we've seen some great designs in this city. We hope that others will follow.”
With the amount of high-rise condominium plans we analyze, it’s nice to see a developer do something a little different, and stand out from the crowd. Too often, developers get caught up in simply getting the project to market, with little to no discussion about producing a design that will stand the test of time.
Congrats and thank you to our friends over at Cityzen for incorporating the history of the site into their plans, and also continuing to push the limits on high-rise condominium designs.
