RAW ENERGY: The Power of People
By Lucas on Jul 02, 2013
On June 26, 2013, RAW Design hosted their annual party for Toronto’s architectural and design community. This year, the event was called RAW ENERGY, and was all about the power that people have to transform cities. Since July is Architecture Month on the Newinhomes.com Blog, we figured this was the perfect event to kick things off.
RAW ENERGY
A variety of industry professionals were invited out to the rooftop of the parking garage at 211 Adelaide St. West for RAW ENERGY. Everyone from developers to interior designers to clients of RAW were in attendance.
The theme of the night was how human power and ideas are what transform cities. Director of RAW, Roland Rom Colthoff, stated in a release, “While cranes and machinery seemingly build our urban landscapes, we wanted to remind guests the role people have in creating the ideas that shape our future environments.”
The main attractions at RAW ENERGY were the people-powered installations. Everything at the party was energized by harnessing human power. A man-sized hamster wheel, propelled by different athletes throughout the night, powered the tunes for the party, giving Alex Merrell (DJ for Taio Cruz) the juice to get the party moving.
ASE Power, the creators of incredibly efficient bicycle generators, and the University of Toronto’s Human Power Vehicle Design Team provided their products that discharged electricity back into the grid. Also, MonkeyLectric had a team of triathletes cycling to power a graphic light show on the back wheels of the bicycles, and also a display of the RAW logo provided by Eurolite.
Overall, it was a pretty great night, especially when the sun set and the light show began! Check out our Facebook album for more photos of the RAW ENERGY event.
About RAW Design
RAW Design is one of the fastest growing architecture firms in Ontario. As leaders in the architectural industry, they are currently involved in some of the Greater Toronto Area’s most highly anticipated residential projects. A few examples include Ironstone by Davies Smith Developments, Beach Club Lofts by Zen Homes, and Motif and 109OZ by Reserve Properties.
RAW’s modern-contemporary approach to design is unique. The RAW ENERGY event displayed their philosophy perfectly: “It’s human ideas and experiences that are fuelling its [Toronto’s] rapid transformation” (Colthoff).
According to RAW’s website, the firm has a lot in the pipeline, so we are very excited to see how their designs impact Toronto in the coming years.
