More Plans Revealed for Buttonville

One of the most interesting projects that we’ve been following over the past few years is Buttonville Town Centre, the redevelopment of Buttonville Airport.
As we mentioned last year, Cadillac Fairview wants to redevelop the lands into a master planned area with a great mix of residential, retail, and other key community components.
“We want to create a beacon for those travelling down Hwy. 404,” said Cadillac Fairview Land Use Planner and President of Malone Given Parsons Ltd., Don Given to YorkRegion. “It lets people know they’ve arrived in Markham. This could be the catalyst to change and improve the area.”
In a public meeting in Markham last week, Cadillac officially presented their plans, which includes something that we didn’t expect! On top of bringing 4.6 million square feet of office space and a mix of public areas, parks, and a man made lake, Cadillac wants to build a 60-storey condo. If Cadillac is approved to build a 60-storey condo, it will be a real game changer!
A 60-storey tower is not crazy news for Toronto; we constantly see a significant amount of high-rise proposals for the downtown core. But, a 60-storey condo in the 905? That’s a precedent setter!
The biggest issue that revolved around a high-rise in Markham was the presence of an airport. The City felt that building skyscrapers around an airport may not be the smartest idea. With that airport now eliminated, all bets are off.
“When this is all done, we want the people of Markham to say, ‘This is the way it should be’,” Mr. Given said. “We want this to be a place for everyone.”
Is Markham ready for a skyscraper? Do you think the 60-storey condo will be approved?
