Mitchell Cohen Receives Honorary Doctorate from Ryerson University

When Cohen accepted his Doctor of Laws degree, he gave a passionate speech, thanking all who have been involved in his work, including members at Ryerson University, his colleagues at Daniels, and his friends and family.
“I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do. What I did know was that, along with all of us who had come of age in the sixties, I had an obligation, a responsibility in fact, to make the world a better place,” Cohen said about his first graduation.
Of course, Cohen went on to do just that. By 1973, after receiving a Masters in Social Psychology and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Cohen answered a help-wanted ad in the Montreal Gazette. The YMCA was in search of a community development worker. This experience spurred Cohen’s lifetime passion for community work.

“Fast forward 40 years, and along with all of my partners at Daniels, I am still doing community development work, supporting a group of tenants who are creating a better life for themselves and their families through the Regent Park revitalization,” Cohen said.
It has been a busy few years for Cohen - his awards shelf must be getting crowded. He was recently presented with a 2013 Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, an exclusive award for select Canadians that have demonstrated significant contributions and achievements. In 2010, Cohen was honored with the Award of Merit from St. George’s Society for his outstanding contributions to the community.
