Mikey Walk of Life helping children at risk of cardiac arrest

If the spring sunshine has you in a walking mood, then you should sign up for the Mikey Walk of Life charity event, which is happening on May 27, 2017 at the Ontario Science Centre and E.T. Seton Park.
Heathwood Homes and Herity founded The Mikey Network in honour of Mikey Salem, a partner in Heathwood and Herity that passed away unexpectedly while playing golf in Muskoka. Given Mikey’s compassion and consideration for his family and loved ones, it made sense to honour his memory by helping others.
If there was a defibrillator onsite, Mikey’s life may have been saved. That’s why The Mikey Network is devoted to ensuring as many public spaces as possible are equipped with automated external defibrillators (AED).
To this date, The Mikey Network has donated 2,193 AEDs across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and they have trained 12,100 people on CPR and AED use. 235 AEDs have been donated to Mikey Kids Families and 269 to Peel Public Schools.
The Mikey Network also has a free app that gives high school students the opportunity to learn how to perform CPR and use an AED. While the high school students learn these valuable skills, they are also accumulating volunteer hours that they need in order to graduate. So far, more than 2,000 students have downloaded the app!
The funds raised during the Mikey Walk of Life charity event will go towards supporting the Mikey Network initiatives and also help children at high risk of cardiac arrest lead normal lives.
You can sign up as an individual or as a team to participate in the Mikey Walk of Life event. There is 1k, 3k, or 5k walk you can do or you can sign up for the 5k or 10k run. In addition to the walk and run, there will be many family activities and exercises, including a bouncy castle and mascots. There will also be free t-shirts, snacks, drinks, and a barbecue!
