In celebration of Toronto’s architectural evolution, The Market Gallery and The Toronto Architectural Conservancy are putting on a free exhibition called ‘Smart Address’ until January 25.
Smart Address features black-and-white photographs of Toronto buildings in the 1920s and ‘30s reflecting Art Deco and Style Moderne. The exhibition will expose the impressive changes Toronto underwent during the First and Second World Wars, showing how the architecture of the city represented changing cultures.
Providing visitors with the chance to observe the city’s most renowned buildings, the exhibition epitomizes Toronto’s resilient nature. "The Smart Address exhibit gives visitors the opportunity to see some of the City's original and best architectural legacy," said Councillor Michael Thompson (Ward 37 Scarborough Centre). "It is impressive that many of these buildings still stand to this day. A number of them have also been retrofitted onto new structures, so that their presence is still with us."
For Torontonians looking to gain a better understanding of the city’s historical roots, this exhibit is definitely worth checking out.
"This exhibition is both a celebration of Toronto's diverse architecture and a reminder of how our city continues to evolve," said Councillor Pam McConnell (Ward 28 Toronto Centre Rosedale). "The beautiful designs and enduring artistry of these buildings are important touchstones to our past and a vital part of our urban fabric."
