Life on the Road in a House on Wheels
By Penny on Aug 26, 2014
After having lived in a tiny trailer while they travelled around the U.S. and Canada for the past eight months, Matthew Davey and Kat Walters are building their own dream home on wheels in the back of a flatbed truck!
Differing from the standard “dream house,” this couple who clearly loves to travel is building a 2.4 metre by six metre home, complete with a tub, sink and composting toilet! Though it may not be everyone’s interpretation of “luxury,” the home does come with a staircase that leads to a second storey loft-style bedroom.
“Our bedroom loft in the tiny house will be relatively the same size as this trailer,” said Walters. While many would think this space is too small to cohabit, the couple seems to be perfectly content and confident that this house will satisfy all of their needs, reassured by the fact that the home will be four times bigger than the trailer they used to travel in.

With the freedom of being able to move around whenever they would like, does size really matter? Like most things, it’s a matter of personal preference, but for any vagabond at heart, this is more than enough space. Although Davey and Walters are the first to build their own home, more and more home designers are coming out with these small-home ideas. For example, we’ve seen the incredible work by Nomad Micro Homes in Vancouver and we’ve even see some interesting designs by Mexican architect Juan Carlos Ramos who is trying to bring back the pyramid! A home on wheels is a traveler's dream, after all, you would enjoy having all of your possessions with you at all times and have the privacy you need whenever you seek it.
So how much does a house like this cost? Being built in Guelph, Ontario, Davey and Walters are confident they can build the house for under $20,000! Having saved a significant sum of money by using reclaimed materials, they think they will be moving into the mobile home as early as November 1, 2014.
They haven’t revealed where they’ll go first, but we’d like to know where you would go if you could travel by home! Maybe one of these homes is more your speed?
