Last Minute (and thoughtful) Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day!
By Penny on May 09, 2014
It’s probably too late to start building the pantry or spice rack she’s always dreamed of or start customizing the closet to her likings, but here are a few ideas that will make you look thoughtful on a strict deadline!
Kitchen herb garden

As it gets trendier and trendier to use organic herbs in daily cuisine, we’re almost certain that your mother will LOVE this adorable kitchen garden. Whether she’s the family chef or not, every meal will be enriched with these fresh, healthy and organically grown herbs-- not to mention how these brainpower boosting, energizing, cancer fighting, colon cleansing (and soothing) sprigs can help contribute a much needed dash of pizzazz to your kitchen!
Herbs, unlike their needier green friends (like flowers and trees), require very little space to grow happily. That being the case, you can exercise creative liberty and fill all sorts of fun containers with your favourite flavours in accordance with the existing kitchen décor. Our favourite is this gorgeous teacup design, with engraved tags for labelling. If these are too dainty, or you don’t want to use up all of your mom’s fine china, try using recycled cans, which can be painted and labeled to your liking.

Creative coasters

Some mother, somewhere in the GTA is definitely harassing someone to use a coaster. Tired of coffee rings on their precious Brazilian Rosewood tables, mothers can never be equipped with ‘too many’ coasters. Luckily for you (and her), there are tons of easy DIY coaster ideas on Pinterest for you to choose from.
Our favourite is this one that uses old Scrabble pieces to spell-out witty/cute/fun words that will put a smile on your mother’s face every single time someone uses them. Don’t forget to add felt to the bottom of the wooden pieces to secure the letters and provide a protective foundation. Using a strong adhesive found at any craft store, these letters will stick no problem and only take a few hours to dry into place. A great touch can be a shiny top-coat that will keep those ugly wine and coffee stains from setting into the coaster itself.
Candle holder memoir

Every mother has kept at least a few horrendous “masterpieces” from your childhood. Tucked away in a dark closet corner, these stick-figure family portraits can now be forever on display in living rooms all over (hooray!). Be sure not to damage the original; you can photocopy a print at a photography store close to you and modify the measurements so that they hug your chosen candle holder snuggly. Just like your mother will want to do after you present it to her on the side of breakfast in bed! You can choose to laminate the print, wrap it against a glass holder and secure it with a sealant spray from the craft shop.
The cliché, but much loved acrostic poem
There are some tired ideas that somehow, still work every time. We like this one in particular because it has the ability to echo your true sentiments about the woman you call mother. More intimate presentations can be executed by using paint brushes and your own penmanship and frames that speak more towards the style of your mother’s home.
Grandmothers like gifts too!
Via the-reflex0.blogspot.com
Don’t forget to show your grandmother(s) some well-deserved love too. This easy idea will for sure earn a special spot in the living room. Using a wooden board, paint and stencil, you too can achieve this gorgeous look for a gift they’ll love. Print out photos of all the grandchildren (we recommend finding silly ones of everyone else so you stand out as the favourite) and clothes-pin them against the board. You can customize this with colours you know your grandmother will love and add fun wooden cut-out shapes found at good craft shops anywhere.
Good luck to all you last minute Mother’s Day celebrants, and Happy Mother’s Day to all the hardworking moms out there!
