J. Davis House design pays homage to area’s rich history

Very recently, we had the opportunity to tour the presentation centre for J. Davis House, a new boutique condo in Toronto by Mattamy Homes and Biddington Homes. We checked out the suite vignettes, admired the high quality finishes, and got the very first look at the scale model building.
The scale model was very impressive and had us picturing what this Yonge and Davisville site will look like by 2018 (the scheduled occupancy for J. Davis House). To give us an even more vivid picture of the future of J. Davis House, Associate Johnny Chimienti of Graziani + Corazza Architects Inc. provided some insight into their design process.
“We defined the ground-level, middle and top sections of the building with specific treatments,” Chimienti explained. “The podium will house retail along Yonge Street to animate the streetscape, and residential along Belsize Drive.”
Davisville has a rich history that stems back to the mid 1800s, and the Yonge corridor is lined with heritage buildings and other restored brick buildings, so it was very important to support this aesthetic with J. Davis House.
“Brick piers in a rhythmic pattern offer vertical articulation, and the brick is a burnt burgundy colour native to the area,” said Chimienti. “Horizontal banding in precast creates glass boxes. Then the building terraces back at the seventh floor. Glass block forms large recessed balconies that wrap around the upper portion, with glazing highlighting the play of light and shadow. It is visually seamless, yet at the same time, distinct. The overall effect has an industrial warehouse feel to it, which is appropriate for this setting. It’s fresh and modern, yet reflects the rich heritage of the area.”
J. Davis House will rise nine storeys and feature very large terraces. It’s important to note that although this new condo is close to Yonge and Eglinton, this is not the kind of residence that you will find a few blocks to the north, as Linda Robinson, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, High-Rise, Mattamy Homes, explained when we toured the presentation centre.
Yonge and Eglinton has that high-rise, business centre, hustle and bustle kind of atmosphere, where Davisville Village is a more intimate, down to earth neighbourhood. The strategic use of materials, ground floor retail, and stepped back design will surely complement the vibe throughout Davisville Village.
There will be approximately 190 suites at J. Davis House, including studios to two-bedroom+dens, ranging from 300 to 1,485 square feet. What’s special about the suites at J. Davis House is the high quality standard features and finishes, plus terrace sizes that can range to more than 1,200 square feet! Imagine having a private outdoor area that is almost as large as your indoor living space; the entertainment possibilities are endless.
The amenities at J. Davis House include a 24/7 concierge in the stunning lobby, a fully equipped fitness centre with a yoga studio, a great party room for hosting either small or large get togethers, and a guest suite for when friends and family are in town.
Of course, the other huge selling point of J. Davis House is the wealth of amenities in the immediate vicinity. There are plenty of local bakeries, cafes, and restaurants, and many independent shops. There are also recreation centres, schools, libraries, movie theatres, and the Davisville Subway Station is only a three minute walk away.
Thanks to all of these amenities, plus the nearby Beltline Trail and tree-lined streets, Walkscore.com gives 1955 Yonge Street a 96 out of 100 Walk Score, a 94 Transit Score, and a 100 Bike Score! Clearly, car-free living is an option at J. Davis House.
