Interior design predictions for 2017

It’s time to make my new home décor and interior design predictions for the year! Some trends emerge and take off, while others fade away. I thought it would be fun to pick five trends for this year and try to predict which ones will materialize and which ones will make a short appearance and dwindle away.
1) Fringe

Fringe brings movement and textural interest to furniture pieces and accessories. Tassels and fringe are expected to emerge this year and they will show up in some unexpected places. You may want to consider making a big statement with extra thick tassels such as the ones that adorn the sofa in the picture above. Do you see the fringe benefits of adding this decorative accent in your home? Because this trend is here to stay, at least for 2017.
2) Butterfly motif

Watch butterfly prints come alive this season thanks to fashion icon Christian Lacroix. Consider wallpapering a powder bath to make your room flutter with excitement. You may not want to commit to a complete butterfly ensemble as pictured in the designed bedding by Lacroix, however, you could certainly experiment by using it sparingly on an accent chair or cushion. This one will be big this year and definitely materialize.
3) Nooks

My favourite trend prediction for 2017 is the introduction of nooks. Carving out cozy nooks either for contemplation or meditation is a perfect way to escape from a hectic day. Maybe you would like an eating nook? Or a reading nook? Kids love to have dedicated areas to sleep and play. Is there a nook in your future? Look for nooks to appear in design for 2017 and well beyond. Although most of us like open floor plans there is something special about a nook’s cradling effect.
4) Navy cabinets
Via Now how about a couple predictions of trends that will perhaps make a short appearance, then fade away. Navy cabinets are making a chic introduction in 2017. A navy bathroom or laundry cabinet would be a great idea, especially if you are painting over older wood cabinets.
However, I don’t believe too many people will commit to navy kitchen cabinets. Kitchen cabinets are a big investment and therefore I expect most people will play it safe with white, soft gray or wood tones. A navy kitchen could look awesome now but will it five years from now? Would you choose navy kitchen cabinets?
5) Living walls
Via Living walls and indoor vines are another trend for 2017. It is no surprise given that Pantone’s Colour of the Year is Greenery. Plants have long been praised for oxygenating the air throughout your home. Adding a vine or two in your bedroom could help you with a healthy slumber.
With our ever busy lifestyles though, I don’t think many of us have the time to care for a whole living wall. What do you think? Will you be planting indoor vines or a living wall in your home? There are households where living walls have been present for years, but I doubt it will become a common trend among the average homeowner.
