The Icon: New Images Released!
By Lucas on Dec 11, 2012
Last summer, we introduced you to The Icon, a new high-rise slated for University Ave. We knew The Icon’s specs, but we were still waiting to see the cool design by Core Architects. Well, thanks to our friends over at SkyscraperCity, we now know what the future has in store for 480 University Ave.
For those who missed our first report, Amexon Development has purchased the office tower at 480 University Ave. The office portion of the tower will be maintained and enhanced, while the condominium portion will be added on top.
As you can see in the rendering, the current 18-storey office building will be re-cladded with glass, offering some clean lines and a new contemporary look. Amexon is planning on adding another 37 storeys to the building, reaching 55 storeys in total.
One of our favourite parts of The Icon’s design is the podium. The white interweaving lines are very interesting, and is unlike anything Toronto’s downtown core has ever seen. This magnificent podium will surely breathe new life into the streetscape of the area.
We will probably start seeing more and more of these types of projects in the city. With the lack of available, affordable land in the GTA, specifically in the downtown core, developers are going to have to get more creative with their projects. There are many office buildings in Toronto that may share the same fate as this one!
