How to throw together a last minute New Year’s Eve party at home

Whether you live in the suburbs or close to downtown Toronto, there’s always something exciting to do to celebrate New Year’s Eve. In fact, there’s often so many options that you leave it until the last minute and all the events sell out. Or maybe you just don’t want to pay the inflated entry fees. Either way, if you’re thinking of putting together a super last minute NYE bash at your place, we have a few tips for you. 

Frozen hors d’oeuvres 

Don’t get fancy with the food. You’re not throwing a dinner party. Go pick up some frozen spring rolls, spanokopita, little pigs in a blanket, then toss them in the oven when your friends are on their way. Make sure you buy some extras; frozen hors d’oeuvres are so easy to prepare that you can simply toss another batch into the oven if you see the mini-quiche supply dwindling. 

Make it a BYOB

The clock’s ticking. You don’t have time to go to the LCBO to stock up for all your friends. The line-up is always crazy long around NYE because just like you, people have waited until the last minute. Tell your guests they need to bring their own beverages, whatever their poison may be, and all you have to do is worry about yourself. Of course, the LCBO lines would all be shorter if all hosts provided drinks, but who’s that generous? 

Have a real camera handy 

Insta stories and Facebook albums are fine, but to make your party truly memorable, have a real camera floating around - something like the Polaroid Instax that prints the photo immediately. Believe it or not, these have become a novelty and are growing in popularity. It will give your guests something to do, laugh at, and pose for. At the end of the night, get people to take home their favourite flicks. 

Assign playlist duty 

Sure, you have the skills to put together a killer NYE playlist, but you don’t have the time. Hit up your most tune-savvy friend and make them in charge of the party playlist. They’ll be honoured that you asked and be eager to impress you and your guests. 

Easy theme

You can get everyone in the party mood by theming your party, but make it something easy, like pajamas or beach attire. Don’t go all out and make it space themed or something because no one has time to put that outfit together.
