Hopefully you got your entry in - Genworth Canada and Habitat for Humanity Canada’s (Habitat) The Meaning of Home contest is officially closed, having raised $35,190 with 7,038 entries from all over Canada!

The contest, which asked Canadian students in grades 4, 5 and 6 to explain the meaning of ‘home’ in essay form will provide one lucky winner with the opportunity to make a colossal difference in their community. The first prize winner will get to choose a Habitat affiliate for Genworth to donate $60,000, as well as a pizza party for their entire school!

With a donation tracker keeping count of every entry by province, Ontarians can be proud of all its little scholars who finished strong, with an astounding 3,546 entries. Last year, the first place prize was awarded to Winnipeg’s Chaamindri who was in sixth grade. Access to her entry, titled “Changing My Life” is published on the archives of www.meaningofhome.ca along with this year’s entries.

Wrapping up this year’s contest marks an important milestone for the The Meaning of Home, as it is the eighth year running with the most successful turnout to date. Surpassing last year’s number of entries by over 2,000, it’s no wonder there is so much buzz going on. Well-known television personality, host and executive producer of HGTV’s Income Property, Scott McGillivray will be participating as one of the contest judges.

Focussing on the ideas and meanings of shelter, comfort and family, these entries are certain to pull at your heart strings. Community Relations Leader of Genworth Canada, Linda Belanger said “Since launching in 2007, our employees have read more than 15,000 entries and we never cease to be amazed by the inspiring and thoughtful words of these young authors.” These entries include touching revelations about the lives of participating students, reflecting on these themes that are so commonly overlooked.

“There are more things in a home than just somewhere we live; it’s a place for laughter, smiles, and also crying. Houses can be lived in by anyone, but a home is where your heart is. Homes are where you’re starting footsteps begin, as we get older you might own a different house, but homes will stay in your lives forever.” - Maldiny, grade 6, Toronto, Ontario.

Participants are awaiting contest results which will be announced at the end of January 2014. Can’t wait to see who the winner is!
