Free and Affordable March Break Activities in Toronto!

By Lucas on Mar 06, 2014

March Break is here, and we’re not going to lie, the weather isn’t supposed to be great. Up until March 16th, the Weather Network is predicting a few -10 degrees celsius days; not great for those of us who haven't jet off to an exotic paradise for the week. Don’t let it get you down though because the City of Toronto has announced a bunch of affordable and free activities to do right here in Toronto!

1) Camps

Via the City’s website, you can learn all about a number of camps that offer a wide variety of recreational activities that your kids will love. This is also a great opportunity to look into which summer camps your kids might be interested in!

2) Swimming

Escape the cold and visit one of the City of Toronto’s 64 indoor pools. Whether you’re signing the kids up for swimming lessons, going for a leisurely swim, or getting your daily exercise in, these pools can accommodate you!

3) Riverdale Farm

Brave the cold to tour Riverdale Farm’s 7.5 acres of pathways and wooded areas. You’ll forget all about the cold once you visit the cows, horses, donkeys, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, rabbits, and other petting zoo animals!

4) High Park Zoo

Farm animals not your thing? Then check out the High Park Zoo, which is Toronto’s oldest zoo and is actually celebrating its 120 anniversary this year. You’ll find a more exotic array of animals here, like bison, peacocks, and reindeer!

5) Toronto Islands

Bundle up and catch a ferry to the Island! Escape the bitter cold of the city and take in the snowy views. There are a number of attractions on Toronto Island for you and the kids, so bring the whole family!

6) Spring Flower Shows

At Centennial Park Conservatory and Allan Gardens Conservatory, they’re pretending like winter doesn’t even exist. If you're looking for a way to forget about the cold, surrounding yourself with spring flowers is one of the best ways to do it. Call Centennial Park at 416-394-8543 and Allen Gardens at 416-392-7288 for more information.

7) Museums and historic sites

A number of museums and historic sites in Toronto are planning fun drop-in activities for families, and many of them have organized interactive day camps for the kids for all of March Break. For example, Colborne Lodge in High Park is inviting families to attend an historic house tour and they’re also planning a children’s activity to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

We hope these suggestions help you shake off the winter blues! Have a great March Break with your children!
