DIY Projects to Spruce up the Kitchen
By Lucas on Sep 10, 2014
Our previous DIY blog post focused on transforming your boring bar in the basement into a trendy, rustic one, worthy of your finest bottles. This time, we have four fun and easy ways for you to spruce up your kitchen!
The perfect tray
When you’re having friends over, it’s always polite to serve a few snacks or beverages, so why not do it in style with a tray you made yourself! This isn’t just any ordinary tray though, it will match your kitchen’s decor perfectly.
This DIY project only works if you happen to have an extra cupboard door lying around, which is actually quite common for some reason. All you have to do is go out and pick up a couple matching handles and attach them to both ends of the cupboard. Voila - a fancy tray. Even if you have an old cupboard from a previous renovation just sitting in the basement or something, you can use that too, it doesn’t have to match your current kitchen perfectly!
Wool coasters
These are actually professionally made by alderandcoshop.com. If you don't have a nice sweater to ruin, check out this online shop!
Okay, so your friends are over and you have a beautiful tray that everyone has commented on, and now they’ve all taken their drinks and will eventually place them on your granite counters or wood coffee table. Avoid ugly ring stains with some handmade wool coasters!
Find an old 100 percent wool sweater that no one wears anymore and wash it with hot water. Then toss that sweater in the dryer with a pair of jeans and put it through two or three cycles. That sweater should be well ruined, and the wool should be very tight. Now, just take a pair of scissors and cut out whatever shaped coasters you like!
Wine glass holder
Now that your party is done and you’re left to hand wash all the wine glasses yourself, you need an imaginative way to store them. For this DIY project, you’ll need to visit an antique market and look for a nice, old rake. Just pop the head off and screw it to the wall in your kitchen. It’s as easy as that! If you already have an old rake sitting out in the shed - even better - but please don’t use an old plastic rake or take the cheap route an pick one up from Canadian Tire. It’s got to have that rustic look!
Chalkboard grocery list wall
Your friends ate all your good cheese and crackers, and if you forget to buy more, the rest of the family will be just furious. That’s why you need a chalkboard wall near the exit of your kitchen. All you have to do is pick a piece of kitchen wall (away from where food is prepared or consumed) and cover a section with chalkboard paint. Your family can add desired grocery items whenever something comes to mind. And since kitchens these days also serve as secondary living rooms, the chalkboard is perfect for leaving reminders and messages.
We hope these DIY projects for the kitchen have inspired you to spruce up your new home! Stay tuned to the Newinhomes.com Blog for more features coming soon.
