In the world of model homes across the Greater Toronto Area, there is an outstanding, ultra-luxurious, must-see residence at
King Oaks in King City.
Aspen Ridge’s exquisite Burgundy (Elevation A with Health Spa) is shown with the finished basement, which brings its size from 6,574 to a grand 7,906 sq. ft. Appointed by the inimitable Mike Niven, this sumptuous model epitomizes the design and construction quality that discriminating purchasers expect.
“The buyers here appreciate surroundings that are eclectic and collected, rather than matchy,” Niven says. “Everything in this open-concept model is very rich looking, and the décor tends to graduate from more formal to more casual from front to back. We applied a colour palette that has a vintage feel, with copper, powder and steel blues, ochre and rust. We kept the backdrop neutral, added a lot of detailing on the floors and ceilings, and introduced colours in bits and pieces. The home is stunning yet approachable. Many of the finishes are washed with a patina that makes them look aged. The furnishings are an overall mix of antiques, fine items and industrial fixtures. And everywhere there is drapery in this home, there are floor lights. At dusk, the effect is incredible.”
In the Burgundy model’s living room, which has neutral walls, a washed blue colour is picked up in the cushion on the ottoman. “In this room, the moulding on the walls gives the look of panels, the double cornice adds an interesting detail, and the indirect lighting refers to the nature in the artwork.” Of particular note is the folding screen at one end of the room. “We had photographs of the area applied to the screen, then lacquered and hand rubbed to create a matte finish. It looks amazing combined with the comfortable furniture covered in beautiful fabrics.”
A beautiful fireplace in the two-storey family room provides a focal point, along with more artwork that speaks to King Oaks’ natural surroundings. Again, the furnishings are stylish and inviting. We placed a wool matte area rug in an oversize herringbone print for a casual, warm feeling,” Niven says. “And once again, colours from the palette are added via plush cushions and other accessories.”
The first thing you notice in the elegant dining room is the stunning antique chandelier hanging from the coffered ceiling over the oval dining table. “This is an original,” Niven says. “The interesting dining chairs are upholstered with a flat chenille on the seating part and a pattern on the backs that features blues, ochre, tans and golds. The effect is subtle yet striking.”
The gourmet kitchen in the Burgundy model features a monster island, as Niven calls it. “The porcelain flooring is done in a huge pattern, which is very rich looking. The upper cabinetry has a walnut antique ivory glaze, and the island provides contrast in a dark burnt navy. We picked up on the blue in the multi-coloured backsplash of onyx strips, which also features copper and golds. The multi-coloured stone on the hood vent is repeated for the top of the island.” Just outside the kitchen, adjacent to the magnificent winding staircase at the back entry, is a luxurious wine-tasting table and double wine cooler. The separate wine cellar in this home is another must-see. With two walls of storage framed by rich woods and a rich stone floor, it is more elaborate than those in many restaurants.
In the master bedroom, which is enhanced with natural light from three windows and the glow of a gas fireplace, the walls are done in a light shade of grey/blue. According to Niven, “The walnut hardwood flooring is laid in the same large herringbone pattern used throughout the home. The custom-made dressers and night tables complement the surroundings, and the seat at the bottom of the bed is a reproduction of an Italian antique.” Another standout in this model is the master bedroom’s custom dressing room, which has mirrors, seating and an amazing amount of storage - a real luxury. The sumptuous ensuite continues the pampering with a dazzling chandelier over the floating tub, which sits in an oval recess wrapped in glass wall tile. The limestone flooring has marble inserts that outline the oval for an astounding effect.
