Dig-to-Done: Steady Progress at B.streets
By Lucas on Jun 19, 2013
This week, the team at the Toronto Star’s Newinhomes.com ventured up to B.Streets Condos for our monthly construction update with construction manager Chris Hawkins.
Wind delays become more common as the building rises
The last time we were at B.streets, it was about four storeys up, with the construction team fighting off some poor weather and wet conditions. This past month, the rain has continued to be an issue, and as the boutique condo rises, wind is starting to cause some delays.
“The last two weeks we have had a lot of half-days due to wind. Wind is our biggest enemy; it causes the most havoc. If you’re pouring a slab and only have some wind, you can get through it – the area is bigger. But, when you’re doing what we are doing now, filling in the smaller spots like the walls, using the crane, any type of wind can cause a real problem,” Hawkins said.
What's next for B.Streets
Despite the wind issues, Hawkins and his team have made some real progress, and they remain on schedule for the completion of the outside concrete shell.
Hawkins said, “We are on the sixth floor now, and we have three more to go. Right now we are scheduled to have the roof completed, with concrete on Aug. 14. The lane homes, we are leaving those to the end, until September – there’s only two weeks of work there.”
The growth that we have seen over eight months is pretty impressive. It seems like yesterday we were visiting the sales centre in the former school, learning more about the project. Hawkins spells out what steps he and his team need to take over the next few weeks:
“Next week, we start external metal studs on the second floor. We start brickwork in four weeks. Windows will be on site in six weeks. We should have our precast here in about five weeks. In another week, we should see things ramp up. We have 50 guys on site right now, but next week we should see over 100 guys working on the site at one time.”
Once again, we would like to thank construction manager Chris Hawkins and the team at Lindvest for allowing us the opportunity to get an up close look at one of Toronto’s most exciting new developments. We look forward to going back next month to check up on progress once again!
