DevMcGill reveals Arthaus branding for new landmark tower in Ottawa

It isn’t rare to find the Newinhomes.com team as far as the outer suburbs of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and even beyond, but we travelled even further than usual last week with a trip to Ottawa. Why the long trip? Real estate developer, DevMcGill, is partnering with the City of Ottawa and Group Germaine Hotels on the Ottawa Art Gallery Expansion and Arts Court Redevelopment project.

President of DevMcGill, Stéphane Côté, as well as Mayor of Ottawa Jim Watson, the Honourable Madeleine Meilleur, MPP for Ottawa-Vanier, Rideau-Vanier Ward Councillor Mathieu Fleury, and other project partners were in attendance to officially launch the project, even though excavation has already begun. Fun fact: In Ottawa, they blast instead of dig because of the amount of limestone.

“This project marks the beginning of a new chapter in Ottawa’s cultural history,” says Mayor Watson. “The progress we’ve seen today is preparing the foundation of a long-standing vision for a municipal arts centre for the visual, performing, literary and media arts and for the revitalization of Ottawa’s downtown that will be celebrated for years to come.”

The development will feature an expanded art gallery and Arts Court space, a Le Germaine Hotel, and residential condo units. Arts Court, currently located onsite in a heritage building, houses 25 arts organizations (they’re kind of like the Artscape of Ottawa). Le Germaine is a luxury hotel that will surely attract a lot of investors, and the residential portion, dubbed “Arthaus,” is DevMcGill’s first work outside of Montreal.

“Located in the heart of Ottawa, this ambitious Arts Court project is the ideal introduction of DevMcGill’s condominiums outside of Montreal,” says Côté. “The private residences start on the 15th floor to the 23rd floor – a boutique building with less than 100 units. The residences will offer ultra-modern architecture, clean, minimalist lines and incomparable views of the city. It is a privilege to be part of the consortium chosen by the City of Ottawa for this iconic project.”

With a mix of arts, hotel, and condos, Arthaus will be attractive for both end-users and investors, especially with the location at Daly Avenue and Waller Street. If you’ve ever been to Ottawa, you’d know that this intersection is literally across the street from the University of Ottawa. Also, the renovated Rideau Centre, which features a Nordstrom, is about 103 steps from the Arthaus site (yes, we counted).

“This ambitious redevelopment by the city and its partners is an exciting community project which the University of Ottawa is proud to be a part of,’’ says Allan Rock, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ottawa. “Just minutes from our campus and located in the heart of downtown, the new Arts Court will provide our students and faculty with access to state-of-the-art theatre facilities integral to cultivating an innovative and creative educational experience.”

The development will feature a 250-seat multi-purpose and film screening room, plus a new 120-seat theatre. There will also be four classrooms available for use by the University of Ottawa. Also within a close proximity to Arthaus is Ottawa’s Byward Market (similar to Toronto’s St. Lawrence Market), where there is plenty of historic architecture, food markets, restaurants, and little shops.

DevMcGill just revealed the name, Arthaus, while we were visiting, so they are still in the registration phase. One of the best things about Arthaus is that since there are other components to the development, construction is well under way.
