Decorating your Tiny Condo for the Holidays

It’s that time of year — people are putting up the holiday decorations. Whether it’s Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or whatever, people love decorating their homes.
This usually poses a problem for downtown condo dwellers. For one, exterior decorating is just about impossible, and if you have a balcony, it’s just not allowed for safety reasons; no one wants to get hit in the head by a glass ornament plummeting from the 54th floor. Secondly, decorating the interior of your tiny condo unit with extra holiday flair can make your living space crammed, and well, ugly.
We’re not holiday decor experts, so we asked around and scoured the internet for tips on how to properly decorate your tiny condo for the holidays. Here are five of our favourite ideas!
1) Christmas Tree Alternatives
Most condos don’t allow real trees. It seems Scrooge-like, but waking up Christmas morning to a raging fire isn’t topping anyone’s wish list. We found many tips recommending smaller corner trees, but some of us Torontonians don’t even have room for that!
Solution: A modern wall decal, which takes up no space at all, or take that tiny corner tree and put it on your coffee table to save floor space!
2) Choose Ornaments Wisely
Clutter is the main issue with holiday decorating in a small condo, so if you have a bunch of ornaments and trinkets or what have you, then your space is going to get tight pretty fast. Even if the ornaments aren’t in your way, they can be an eyesore all bunched together.
Solution: Use clear ornaments that don’t clash with your everyday decor and/or hang ornaments from your ceiling! You can even toss all your ornaments in a glass vase, and voila – decorating done.
3) Replace Existing Decor
A major mistake that condo dwellers make is just throwing a bunch of new decorations over top of their existing accessories. This can be tacky, and again, just looks like a mess of holiday spirit that spilled out from your closet.
Solution: Replace your couch pillows with holiday ones, or swap out your boring white tablecloth for a colourful, festive one! Even posters can replace wall pictures.
4) Just a Little Bit of Ribbon
Ribbon is usually used for gift wrapping, and odds are, you have a bunch left, because no one ever really needs as much ribbon as you get on one of those rolls.
Solution: Tie ribbon to stuff. Easy! Cupboard handles, railings, doorknobs, whatever you want!
5) Decorate Your Door
A wreath is OK, but you can do so much more! The door is like a canvas, and you can make it as cheery as you like, without obstructing anyone’s headroom, or arm, leg, or breathing room.
Solution:There is no solution for this one, just do it!
