Creative Decor Ideas for Your Balcony
By Penny on Aug 06, 2014
Not everyone has a rooftop terrace like at The Ossington (featured above).
Whether you have a balcony, will have one shortly or aspire to have one, these ideas will help you decorate the perfect outdoor space. Though definitely worth the read, there is some bad news: Most condos place limitations/restrictions on balcony decor. Now before you start writing angry letters to project management, know that these rules are set in place by industry experts who take safety into consideration, as well as everyone’s cultural and social preferences. Of course, aesthetic uniformity is also a concern. That said, we hope you get inspired and create a personalized outdoor retreat you can love to no end!

Avoid feeling like you’re just a small part of a concrete jungle by customizing your balcony floor; there are so many different options to choose from! These fancy floors, available in different tiles and boards, will turn your humdrum balcony from a basic amenity, to the private urban oasis you’ve dreamed of.

Why stop there though? Customize the walls of your balcony as well by attaching ‘fence-like’ decor to existing walls. Try decorating only one wall with a vibrant texture or colour, it can serve as an outdoor feature wall. Since the length of many city balconies is quite small, you could find beautiful doors at antique shops that would fit the space nicely.
Now it’s all about finding the furnishings. Keep in mind that winds can be quite powerful at higher levels, so be sure your decor isn’t too lightweight. Avoid hanging plants or lights; even some taller potted plants can prove to be problematic in high-rises.
If your perfect outdoor paradise involves gardening, consider something like this:

The plants are secured and shielded from wind, can enjoy sunlight, look stylish and can be taken indoors during the colder months.
Every homeowner feels like they’re in need of more storage space; much to the irritation of many sloppy condo-dwellers, most building rules specifically prevent you from openly storing your junk on the balcony. So get creative. Put a stylish wicker trunk out on the balcony where you can hide your random knickknacks. You can also install an outdoor bench seat to uniquely meet your storage needs. If you’re creating a lounge space with booth-style seating and tables, consider making the booths hollow, or having the centre table open up.
