We recently had the opportunity to check out the construction progress over at Menkes’ Toronto development, Pears on the Avenue. We met with Site Superintendent, Mark Mulvenna, who brought us up to speed.

Construction progress at Pears

Last time we visited Pears, about a year ago, the site was just a giant dirt hole, and construction on the parking levels had just begun. Mulvenna explained what stage they are currently at: “Right now we’re at the concourse level. Concourse level is ground level at some areas of the job site because we have three different elevations. At the southeast corner, ground floor is ground floor, and at the opposite end of the job, the northwest side, concourse is ground floor.”

Mulvenna continued, “We’re currently performing pour 1b, which is the second half of pour 1 for the concourse level. The next pour will be in about four days. It will be four to five weeks before we reach ground level on the southeast side, depending on how construction goes.”

The construction crew at Pears has come a long way, but they still have a lot of hard work ahead of them. Mulvenna explained that the typical floors, all the floors above the fifth, will only take about a week each, but getting to that point is very complicated.

“There are lots of transfer slabs, the amenity area, pool area, outside decks and terraces, some high floors, there’s retail area on the east side of the building - these areas are a bit more difficult as far as construction goes,” said Mulvenna.

They are aiming to complete the first five floors by March 2014, and with only 15 more floor to go, Pears should be topping off sometime at the end of next summer. Menkes is planning occupancy for fall 2014.
