Construction Update: King+ Condos
By Lucas on Mar 26, 2013
Recently, there have been two very popular topics on our blog: The significant amount of growth in the east end and the preservation of Toronto’s historical buildings. That’s why we headed over to King+ Condos by King Plus Development and Terracomm Development; it falls under both of these categories.
The last time we visited King+ Condos at King and Sherbourne, about eight months ago, construction had not yet begun. Now, the hoarding is up and things are underway - kind of. We can’t really say that construction has started because some demolition needs to take place first.
See the old brick building in the photos? With help from ERA Preservation Consultants, King Plus Development and Terracomm are preserving the facade. The building used to be a hotel, and since King St. East is so well known for its historical brick buildings, it just makes sense to preserve it.
If you look closely at a couple of the photos, you can see that the gutting of the historical building has commenced. With Mike Niven’s team in charge of the interior design, you can bet that the inside of this building is going to be something special. The interior of the lobby will feature a great amount of glass, as well as modern-contemporary furniture, and it will be juxtaposed with exposed brick. The harmonization between the old and new is what King+ Condos is all about.
Right now, the exterior is kind of rough, but it will be fixed up and made to shine just like the rest of the building. The stunning glass structure rising from the historic brick will be a head turner on the streets of King East.
King+ Condos will eventually reach 17 storeys and feature 132 units, with floorplans spanning from studios to two-bedroom+dens. According to the King+ Condos website, available sizes range from 520 to 1,310 square feet.
