Construction Tour of Chaz.Yorkville
By Lucas on Jul 22, 2013
We recently had the opportunity to tour 45 Charles Ltd. and Project Manager Edenshaw Homes’ downtown Toronto project, Chaz.Yorkville. We met with PCL Assistant Superintendent Andrew Scott, as well as Edenshaw’s Director, Development Joseph A. Metcalfe, who acted as our tour guides as we explored the Chaz.Yorkville site.
Construction progress at Chaz.Yorkville
With humidity, the temperature had reached 45 degrees celsius on the day of our construction tour, so the workers were taking a little break to cool off, and we had the site all to ourselves.
Scott explained that if the weather gets too hot or if it starts pouring rain, they need to slow down a bit, but despite the intense weather of the past month, they are still on track at Chaz.Yorkville.
On a day when it’s not 45 degrees celsius, there are about 40 workers on site at the same time. The crew is currently working on the mezzanine level where the condo’s storage areas will be. Scott explained that once they reach the fourth floor, they will extend the crane.
We caught them at an interesting stage because we were able to climb down to P1 and see where they are building the ramp that leads to the next level. Metcalfe and Scott explained the Skydeck system that they use to create the form of the building by pointing out where the form gradually rises to create the ramp from P1 to the mezzanine. Basically, there are adjustable columns that they rig up, and then they lay panels across the top. The panels allow the concrete on top to dry, and when it’s ready, they remove the panels and reuse them for the next step.
According to Metcalfe, the completion date for Chaz.Yorkville is sometime in early 2015. He said that when it’s done, “It will be about 1 meter taller than the building next to it,” and he pointed at the neighbouring tower, 33 Charles.
