City of Toronto announces $200,000 for creation of waterfront music hub

Last week, the City of Toronto committed to providing $200,000 for the creation of a waterfront music hub, which will serve as the new home of The Remix Project. The funding is through the City’s Economic Development and Culture division.

The Remix Project is a non-profit organization that focuses on providing programming for youth facing barriers to success, specifically for those interested in the creative and music industry. The new music hub will be located in the Daniels Waterfront – City of the Arts community on Toronto’s east waterfront!

“Support for The Remix Project is a vital element of the City’s Music Strategy through the positive role it plays for youth who are interested in building their careers in creative industries,” says Mayor John Tory. “With new facilities, The Remix Project will be able to expand its programming and have an even greater impact, while acting as the catalyst for a new music hub in a vibrant part of our city.”

Toronto’s Music Strategy was established in 2016. It advocates for physical hubs to showcase local talent, and train, inspire, and incubate the city’s young musicians. Youth involved in The Remix Project show particular interest in hip hop, beatmaking, remixing, socially conscious music, and other contemporary genres.

The programming also exposes students to non-performing careers in the creative and music industry.

“The Remix Project’s ongoing work and upcoming expansion align with the long-term goals of the City’s Toronto Music Strategy to support music education and the development of music hubs in the city,” says Councillor Josh Colle (Ward 15 Eglinton-Lawrence), Chair of the City’s Toronto Music Advisory Council. “I am pleased that the City will support The Remix Project’s move to this new facility as part of the City’s ongoing support of the music sector.”

Daniels has designated the fifth floor of the east tower at Daniels Waterfront – City of the Arts for non-profit arts organizations. Other organizations in the community include George Brown College, OCAD University, Artscape, and Manifesto.

“Through the support of the City of Toronto, The Remix Project is proud to have created a substantial impact in the life and careers of many youth over the past 11 plus years. Remix is grateful for the opportunity from The Daniels Corporation, in partnership with WJ Properties, to join this incredible new community on the Waterfront surrounded by like-minded organizations,” says Drex Jancar, The Remix Project’s co-founder and chair of its board of directors.

“With this opportunity, our permanent home at Daniels Waterfront – City of the Arts will allow us to extend our reach,” adds Jancar. “We look forward to the long-term growth and sustainability of Remix in the years to come.”

The total cost for The Remix Project’s new home and operational growth is $1.47 million.
