What was formerly an industrial region in Hualien, Taiwan is being transformed into a mountainous luxury beach resort. Utilizing nature’s beauty in design to promote healthy, active lifestyles, the project has been recognized as a finalist in the 2014 MIPIM Awards!
As a contender for the award, Bjarke Ingels Group is honoured for their innovative design and excellence in global real estate in the category labelled, “Best Futura Project.” Selected by a panel of judges in France from 28 finalists, some of the impressive features outlined in the master-plan include the complex’s layout, which is set up to run from east to west, thus maximizing shading, blocking the sun while allowing north-south light to penetrate the units. The buildings will also feature state-of-the-art green roofs, which help to reduce climate control related energy expenditure.

Renowned architect based in Taipei, TLDC has recently attained the licenses necessary to start work on a site formerly used as industrial factory space. The site was chosen for its proximity to the coast as well as the intersecting point where two river deltas meet, thus giving it potential to make way for spectacular views. From the west, Taiwan’s mountainous regions can be viewed, while the east provides a vantage point of the ocean.

Hualien, which is geographically off the eastern Taiwan coast, has undergone dramatic changes with regards to demographics, with the out flux of younger generations seeking better employment possibilities. This shift has prompted the demand for luxurious, ‘second home’ buildings in the area where seniors can enjoy active lifestyles. In adapting the Bjarke Ingels Group design, TLDC hopes to cater to this demand and provide residents with the utmost peaceful lifestyle. Placing particular focus on exercise, the mountainous walkways and spacious trails encourage productive, health-conscious activities. With interesting shops and restaurants along public paths that wrap around the entire complex, there is something for all residents to do, even if they’re not utilizing the speed walk paths!
