A closer look at the design of Canvas Condominium

With excitement building around Canvas Condominium in Toronto by Marlin Spring, we want to take a moment to recognize the team of award-winning designers working to make the development come to life. Marlin Spring is collaborating with Graziani + Corazza Architects on the building design, U31 Inc. for the interiors, and NAK Design Strategies for the landscape architecture.   

Canvas Condominium will stand eight storeys on Danforth Avenue between Woodbine and Main subway stations. The sleek glass and articulated brick will add dimension and interest to the Danforth streetscape, which is in the midst of a transformation.  

“Our architectural inspiration was recalling traditional ‘main street’ attributes in a more contemporary fashion,” says founding partner Enzo Corazza. “We established a rhythm for the commercial ground floor that reflected the cadence of Danforth. Specifically, the window fabric, proportions and use of brick. Materiality was very important for this design, and finding the right balance of masonry and glazing that not only achieved our design esthetic, but also complemented the neighbourhoods.”

The terracing of the building prevents shadowing and it creates opportunities for larger terraces and balconies. The terracing also allows for a variety of suites, providing a wider range of sizes and layouts. Marlin Spring has seen mostly homeowner occupiers purchasing due to the strategically large units and wide choice of two-bedrooms.

U31 Inc. is known for their thought provoking, innovative design approach. They focus on beauty and functionality working harmoniously to create the perfect space. Through the renderings Marlin Spring has released, we get a glimpse of U31’s plans for Canvas Condominium for both the suites and amenity spaces.

The amenities include a fitness centre with yoga area, a stunning lobby, a pet spa, and an impressive rooftop terrace with a fireplace lounge, barbecue station, sundeck, and bocce court. The rooftop terrace provides incredible views of the Toronto skyline and Lake Ontario. “We believe residents are looking for an amenity space that becomes an extension of their personal living area,” says Corazza. “Canvas definitely offers that.”

You can thank NAK Design for the cozy yet sophisticated ambiance of the rooftop terrace. For around three decades, this award-winning firm has been transforming outdoor spaces across Canada (they have offices in the GTA, Ottawa, and Calgary). The greenery around the rooftop terrace will complement the blanket of treetops to the north of Canvas Condominium, as well as the many parks and parkettes peppered throughout the neighbourhood.  

We are also very excited about the impact that Canvas Condominium will make on Danforth at street level. The use of brick and soaring glass will reflect the neighbourhood’s village-like charm, and the contrasting colours will elevate the streetscape, marking a new bar of excellence.
