8 low budget DIY home decor projects

The rental market is tight and home prices are hitting record highs across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). It seems like everyone is on a budget. While you’ve got your dwindling bank account in mind, it’s difficult to keep out the thoughts of new bedroom decor and kitchen upgrades because of the fresh spring air! That’s why we’re giving you some budget friendly home decor projects you can do yourself!

Before going on a DIY spree, you should visit some popular spots like CB2, Elte Mkt, or Restoration Hardware for some inspiration! These stores may be out of your budget, but they’re fun to walk around and you will definitely get some great ideas.    

1) Repurpose sheets

Have your curtains become drab? We bet you have a beautiful bedsheet just sitting in the closet. If you have a curtain rod, simply fold down an edge of the sheet and sew or staple it shut; just make sure the opening is wide enough for the rod. Depending on the desired height, you may have the trim the length. If you’re going for the rustic look, you can do the same thing with a paint drop cloth.

2) Hit up some garage sales

Now that the weather is heating up, people are getting their spring cleaning done. It seems like it’s during spring cleaning when people realize that they have way too much stuff. Keep an eye out for garage sale signs, they will be popping up soon. Even if you don’t have anything specific in mind, just go check it out, you never know what you’ll find!

3) Repurpose wood crates

Wood crates are super versatile for fans of the rustic look. They make great shelves, magazine bins, record holders, and they’re just beautiful looking storage. You can also personalize these by sanding them down and painting them. Antique markets usually have many, but make sure you don’t end up paying $80 for a crate someone painted or stained. Find one that’s a bit more beat up and make it your own.  

4) Display glassware

Pop into a Value Village and head straight for the section with all the glassware and knick-knacks. Everything is usually pretty cheap in this section. For a few bucks you can have a beautiful display of interesting glassware. Depending on the glass you find, you may also have a couple new vases for flowers!

5) Paint doors

Depending on the size of a room and the paint you use, painting can be expensive. Just painting your doors requires less paint and is a great way to add a splash of colour to your living spaces.

6) Make pillowcases

You likely already have pillows, so why buy new ones just for a new look? Visit the closest fabric store and pick out something that you like. This tip is way easier if you have and know how to work a sewing machine.

7) Change hardware

Changing the hardware on your dresser in your bedroom or on the cabinets in your kitchen doesn’t have to be expensive. Antique markets always have miscellaneous handles, knobs, and door pulls. Embrace the variety and pick a bunch that match your personality.

8) Repurpose a wood ladder

A wood ladder can be used for many things. A folding ladder with planks makes a great freestanding shelf. A single ladder leaning vertically on a wall is a trendy towel rack. Mount the single ladder sideways on the wall and you have a bookshelf.
