7 ways to maximize every square foot of your living space
By Lucas on Aug 11, 2017
With home prices on the rise in both the new home and resale markets, buyers are turning to condos and small townhomes as more affordable options, though even these housing types are getting out of reach for some. The Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) recently announced that new condo sales in the GTA hit a record high in June 2017. So, we thought you might like a few tips on how to maximize every square foot of your living space.
1) Install a closet system
If you’re currently just hanging things in your closet and piling things on the ground, then you’re not using your closet properly. Head to IKEA and get yourself some organizers. Wire racks and shelving go a long way, keeping you organized, making everything easily accessible. You may even find you actually have room to get yourself some new pairs of shoes.
2) Embrace a natural palette
White or light gray walls will make your space feel more open, especially if you have low ceilings. Add some contrast with small, boldly coloured decor pieces scattered strategically across the room. Your eye will be drawn to the colour, surrounded by whiteness, making the room feel larger.
3) Get an island cart
If you have some floor space in the kitchen, you should find a permanent spot for a rolling island cart. By permanent, we mean it would have a resting place until you need it. This is a great way to free up storage and it’s additional counter space when you need it. This idea and a few more small kitchen ideas can be found on eieihome.com.
4) Install open shelving
Any room - your bedroom, kitchen, living room, bathroom, basement - looks good with open shelving (as long as you’re displaying some beautiful pieces of decor). Shelving gets things off the ground and forces you to go through your possessions and decide what’s worth displaying and what you should donate.
5) Define your zones
Your living room may feel small, but when you’re watching TV, it doesn’t need to be that big. Use an area rug to define the space, then your eye won’t be distracted by how close the walls are.
6) Get some nesting coffee tables
This look has been trending, likely because of more people deciding to live in condos. You usually see nesting coffee tables in sets of two or three. They all fit together when you need more floor space and expand when you need more surface space.
7) Invest in clear furniture
Glass and acrylic furniture can be expensive, but it can make your dining space seem more open and airy. This look would be especially beautiful in a bright breakfast nook.
We hope these tips help you maximize every square foot of your living space!
