7 ideas to consider for your 2019 kitchen renovation
By Jo-Ann Capelaci on Feb 28, 2019
Do you plan to renovate your kitchen in 2019? Kitchens are one of the most utilized rooms in a household. Considered the heart of the home, kitchens are a place to gather, communicate, cook, and socialize.
If you are planning a kitchen makeover you want it to be functional and beautiful. I have put together seven ideas that you should consider for your kitchen renovation this year. The photos are from a recent kitchen design we completed in Westlake Village, CA.
The photo above is an award-winning kitchen I designed for FarSight Homes, located in Goodwood, ON. This kitchen displays another 2019 kitchen trend of concealed storage. These kitchen cabinets look like furniture pieces and small appliances are hidden behind the beautiful cabinetry (cabinetry by Green Apple Kitchens).
When embarking on your kitchen design, ensure that you trust your design to professionals. I am blessed to work with a great team within the company and beyond with resources for great contractors such as Pfinishing Touch and an amazing builder in FarSight Homes. Do your research and make sure you’re happy with your chosen team.
1) Remove a wall

When embarking on a kitchen renovation, look to see if there is an opportunity to open-up your space. Tearing down partition walls between your kitchen and an adjoining room can transform your kitchen into a completely new space. Don’t be afraid to think beyond the norm. In this home remodel, we took down two walls creating an open floor plan with family room, living room, dining room and kitchen. The interconnected rooms create the look of a larger space as you enter and move about the home. The spaces are clearly defined and yet open to one another.
2) Add a chimney hood fan or decorative exhaust fan

Kitchen appliances can be more than utilitarian. Range hoods have become an extension of design and can greatly impact a space. Choose a complementary material and colour to create a focal point and help break up your cabinets. In this design, we chose a stainless chimney style hood to provide a clean look (and it was affordable, too!).
3) Install open shelving

After tearing down outdated cabinets, consider installing floating shelving in their place. Floating shelves provide areas to display accessories, cookbooks and unique cookware. Shelves can match the cabinets or deliver an added accent, as in this design. The key to open shelving is to keep a design concept in mind and only display items that complement each other and present a uniform effect.
4) Use two or more different cabinet finishes or combinations

Wake up your kitchen by using various combinations of wood and paint. Wood cabinets and matte black cabinetry will prove to be a design leader in 2019. You can combine wood, black and white for a beautiful grouping of finishes. We even added in a charcoal grey island. When you mix shades of grey and black with wood and white it creates eye-catching contrast.
5) Embrace matte black faucets and accessories

Meet the Moen STo faucet in matte black! We have combined it with a stainless sink and black upper cabinets for a high style look that is also big on functionality. Look to see matte black faucets and accessories in designs in 2019.
6) Mix metals
Jenny Quicksall PhotographyMixing metals will continue to be big in 2019. Don’t be afraid to combine black, gold tones and silver in your design. Lighting is a perfect way to mix metal combinations. If you regularly read my articles, you will know I am a lighting fanatic! Every design will benefit from good lighting. In fact, every design is better when lighting is carefully planned. Adding a combination of metals in your accent lighting will bring visual appeal to your kitchen. Continue the theme by adding in metal finishes in furniture, too.
7) Free standing island

Kitchen islands can make a big impact, especially in a small space. We incorporated this freestanding island for function and to deliver a whimsical element. Islands aid in offering more usable counter and storage space. There are a variety of options to choose from, and some even offer the opportunity to have additional seating. Add a versatile and stylish island to your kitchen for a quick, easy and affordable cabinet addition.
