5 Unique Shelving Ideas for Your Home
By Penny on Apr 25, 2014
Organize, organize, organize! We’re not all gifted with the ability to keep things neat and tidy, but these helpful shelving ideas will help you restore order to even the tightest spaces.
The basic shelf

Restoration Hardware inspired, this design works really well because it’s simple, but useful. If you’re going for this minimalist design, try using recycled wooden planks. You can give them the finish of your choice by making a stop at your nearby Lowe’s, Michael’s or Rona and picking up stain-sprays or wood-finish paints that you can sponge on directly. Though you can use this basic shelf idea for practically any room, we think it looks great in this washroom because it adds a much needed sense of style where nothing else could fit.
The ladder shelf
Via dandelionexpress.wordpress.comAfter looking at this great idea, you might be wondering why you never thought about using a ladder as a shelf, especially since they’re particularly efficient when turned horizontally! Far from being a hoarder, my collection of books still seems to take up too much space in my home, and this is the perfect solution! The greatest part (aside from having a place to put your books) is how beautiful it looks on the wall. The fact that it is flipped horizontally is just a matter of preference, there are some really innovative designs on the internet that showcase vertical options for closet spaces, offices and washroom towel racks.
Crate Shelf
Before you immediately shut this idea down because crates are usually… well, pretty ugly, given the nature of their use, check out this photo of how you can use them to help maximize the space in your laundry room as a closet, while introducing a splash of fun and colour! Unlike building a closet, this unconventional use for crates gives you the creative liberty to change the colour theme as often as you’d like. Think about the possibilities: spring pastels, peppy summer bolds, fall earth tones and crisp winter classics. Adding character to any room at an extremely great price, you’ll be the talk of the town!
Jewellery Shelf
As a strong believer that accessories have the ability to make or break your outfit, I’ve accumulated more fashionable pieces than Liberace himself. Much to my frustration, keeping necklaces from bonding together through impossible-to-understand knots is one tough task when there never seems to be enough storage space. This idea is adorable because it is both a practical shelf and a good place to hang jewelry. Using decorative knobs that can be found at any home-store, you can customize the look of your shelf around the style of your choice.
The… Washroom shelf…
For lack of a classier way to put it, this shelf is designed around the modern ways in which people use the washroom. It’s a place for your sanitary tissues, your favourite bathroom reads and a candle - not everyone has a giant bathroom for ornate magazine stands. If you can get over the hilarity of such a witty design, it’s actually extremely practical. Although completely unnecessary, your guests will get a good chuckle out of seeing it—at the very least.
