3 spring spruce-ups for the minimalist mindset

By Contributor on Mar 17, 2016

Spring is the season for rebirth and rejuvenation, so it’s the perfect time to refresh your home décor. If you’re looking to change up the style of your home for spring, we at Modernize suggest the minimalist aesthetic, which is easy to maintain and eco-chic. Here are some simple ideas to spruce up your home this spring.

1) Spring clean to eliminate clutter

If you’ve ever had a “junk” drawer or room, you know how fast clutter can pile up. Clutter not only takes up more floor space than it deserves, it can also make you feel frenzied and anxious. Eliminate that stress by doing some spring cleaning. Sort clutter into piles or bins: keep, donate and sell. Take a trash bag around, too! You’ll be surprised to find how much you don’t use, or how many items simply aren’t your style anymore. This may not sound fun, but the next part is!

Once you’ve reduced your clutter, you can find stylish ways to organize your belongings. For clothing, linens, small items and miscellaneous electronics you don’t want to display, spring for a sleek, clean-line shelving system with closed cabinets. Pick a wood style and stain colour that coordinates with other pieces in your room to achieve that minimalist aesthetic.

There will be certain items you do want to display, like books, personal momentos and pictures. Open cubing and wall shelves can be arranged to add geometric shapes to any room, while offering a storage system to organize your favourite items.

2) Breathe life into décor

Celebrate animals and birds showing their tails again — and flowers blooming! Spring is full of life, and your home can be, too. Some minimalist accessories we love are simple solutions like a vase with fresh, spring flowers, a pastel picture frame collage or even those ceramic spring animals you just couldn’t resist at the flea market.

Bird cages are stylish spring accessories that you can spray paint to match your colour palette. Group neutral colours like beige, black, white, and silver to create smaller focal points throughout any space. The trick is not to draw the eye in too many directions, and not to overcrowd any surface.

Add natural elements like twigs, pinecones, shells and even potted herbs to breathe life into your home. Make sure to open up those blinds and let the warm sunlight stream through. It’s the perfect time to switch up your window treatment, too! We love simple bamboo blinds or neutrally coloured valances.

3) Refresh with new linens

Hating those outdated blankets, throw pillows and accent towels? Take this chance to refresh with spring linens! We love to accessorize with rugs, blankets and pillows, so we spring for simple striped patterns, neutral colours and interesting textures.

Minimalist décor often involves layering neutral shades, patterns and textures to create a cohesive focal point. But that doesn’t mean you have to shy away from colour. You can go for that seasonal look by adding your favourite spring colour into the mix, like aquamarine, rose gold or even a vibrant green.

Cover the table in a new runner, swap out the bath mat in the restroom, or even pull out a special set of spring bedding for the master bedroom. Accent colours can be swapped out each season, so you’ll never get bored! These simple changes can rejuvenate a room and make you fall in love with your minimalist décor all over again.

These are just a few of our favourite spring refreshes, so have fun, get creative, and enjoy your new spring oasis.
